After watching iron man and hearing awesome things about Civil War, I decided to give marvel superheroes another try.  One of my big problems in the past was the difficultly following anything set in a capital U universe.  Even if you're only interested in a few heroes, you have to buy other books when they crossover to someone else or when there's a miniseries- and don't even think about ignoring those, because you'll miss a whole lot of plot.  But iron man was really neat, so I thought I'd look for some instructions on how to approach the set of marvel universe books.

Half an hour of googling later, I'm going back to my rule that I won't read anything till the last book in the series is published.  I swear, if you don't have an obsessed friend you're completely fucked.; there is no way to piece together what books you should read in what order.  Note to marvel:  this is stupid.  An intern's summer project could give your trade paperbacks a 50 year shelf life, rather than an indulgence for people who already followed the series.

On the plus side, the flood of awesome comic book movies has us one step closer to the Japanese system of using comics as a farm team from which 95% of movies and tv emerge.  95% may be a bit high- there's plenty of ideas that won't work written down but are awesome on screen- but I think it's a good trend overall.

It's totally true! I've found my ability to read any DC or Marvel comics had dropped off dramatically since I stopped hanging out with Mike. I find Batman especially bad.
