So there's a whole big thing in the feminist blogs about infertile 1st world couples paying 3rd world women to be surrogate mothers. I thought this was stupid to begin with: everyone involved thinks they're better off, so butt the fuck out. If you think the women have no choice because they're so poor, work to make their conditions better, because taking away their current best choice is not helping.
Then I actually went and read the article and discovered that the women get 10 to 15 times their normal annual wage. I would be a surrogate mother for 10-15 times my annual wage. I would consider being a surrogate for 10-15 times the median US wage. If I was in India, and the benefits included not only a decade and a half of my normal wage, but good medical care and nutrition, free time to upgrade my skills (which at least some women get), and legal help managing the money, I'd do it in a heart beat. How dare these people let their squeemishness prevent a woman from improving her life?
