Genetics and Organic Chemistry both suck. There are many, many reasons for this, but I've realized that not all of them are intrinsic. There are large swaths of genetics I like. If I treat orgo problems as a puzzle, and really try synthesize the knowledge, it can be almost fun, and certainly satisfying. Ditto for most of the boring parts of genetics. What I will never, ever enjoy are the chapters on how we actually know what molecule is. Since we can't actually see molecules, scientists must contort themselves to figure out a molecule's structure. And if they have to do it, I have to know it. NMR, IR spectroscopy, DNA micro-arrays.... I just don't care. So if someone out there could please invent a microscope capable of viewing molecules, thus greatly simplifying the task of molecular identification, I would be very grateful.

Well, there's that one microscope IBM used to show the neato trick where they spelled out "IBM" with individual atoms. :) Think it's a bit outside of your price range, though. :(

Personally, bio scares the willies out of me. Physics, chem, astronomy, computer science - those're fine. Bio, biochem, etc. - eek!
