The dentist said that the pain medication should last ~6 hours, although it varied from person to person: some people only got 3 or 4, some got 8, and a few even got 10. When I asked about side effects, he said that people who used it as a full mouth was sometimes felt a bit sleepy, but since I was only doing topical application that shouldn't be an issue. For those who are new, let's do a small review of my experience with pain medication:

Novacain/lidocain: I need 4 times the normal amount, in part because it wears off faster.
Over the counter analgesics and anti-inflammatories: work for a while, sort of, but I rapidly build up a tolerance:
vicodin: So little effect my friends were prepared to let me drive, until one of us remembered I'd just taken a narcotic
percoset: Ah, here we have real pain relief, if by relief you mean I'm too distracted by the side effects to notice to old pain.

So I assumed that there would be minimal effect, be it primary- or side-. Instead, I get 24 hours of near total pain relief. I think it's 24 hours anyway, because if I take it before bed it lasts till I go to sleep and is gone the next morning. I do have to take it before bed, however, because I start a slow, sleepy descent as soon as I take it, culminating in brick wall at an hour past, when I basically have no choice but to sleep. The least I've slept after this was 2 hours + another half awake hour. The worst was 12, but that bled into regular sleep and I had a sleep debt.
