I have a habit of accusing boyfriends who claimed to find me hot of having "personality goggles"- the implication being I wasn't *really* physically attractive, they just found my brain so attractive they lied to themselves. Even as I said it I knew it was a symptom of bad body image and inability to take a compliment, and I thought that was sad.

Then an extremely pretty friend revealed she couldn't trust anyone who expressed interest in her, for fear they only really liked her looks and considered dealing with the brain attached a price worth paying. And I decided there were worse things than believing everyone who was interested in you was secretly motivated by your sparkling personality.
